Barriers to safer local trips

Even taking the quieter, longer way can leave a stressful crossing you can’t avoid.

Our model strongly favours low-stress routes, including longer detours. Orange and red highlight the high-stress sections that remain for children cycling to school and residents making short local trips.

A school-run example

For a child living on Kirkwood Street, Beaumaris, walking or riding to Beaumaris Secondary College means encountering a high-stress section of Reserve Road or Balcombe Road—even when taking a longer, quieter route.
